Writing to Your MP – Sample letter from a parent

Please note this example letter first appeared on the Penny’s Place childminding blog, but has now been copied here so everything is in one place

Quite a few people have asked me to write a sample letter that they use to base a letter to their own MP

I have promised to do ‘something’ but to be honest with all the petition related stuff, childminding full time – and now the early arrival of Maddy (my 8th grandchild) and the resulting care of Maddy’s older sister and brother – I have not found the time to do one yet.

Then this after noon I was copied into a letter that another childminder was sending to their own MP – and I thought – brilliant – just what is needed. So I sought permission to use it – this was given – and here is the letter.

Philip,

You will be aware of the outcry from Early Years providers in response to Ms Truss’s proposals entitled “More Great Childcare”.  To those of us who work with young children they appear to be nonsensical. All of the childminders I have had contact with, both locally and further afield, share the same concerns over the future of our own businesses, as well as the future implications for children and parents.

Penny Webb, a registered childminder in Kidderminster with many years of experience in the childcare sector has written the following letter to David Cameron, which sets out our concerns surrounding the change in adult:child ratios and the establishment of childminder agencies, and which I should be grateful if you would spare the time to read. Penny has started a petition against these proposed changes which currently has approx 22,000 signatures.  This petition also has the official support of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, the National Childminding Association, and The National Day Nurseries Association. There is another petition also running alongside it, started by childcare.co.uk, which has 18,000 signatures.

I would be interested in your views on this and hope that we have your support in ensuring a more practical solution to childcare in this country.

Best wishes,

Karen Heaton

I am sure you will all agree a great letter and join me in thanking Karen for allowing me to share it.

Below you will find the letter again but this time with some comments in bold  from me, for those who would like some guidance on personalising the letter  a bit.

Philip, Use first name if you know / have met your MP otherwise use formal name. (Karen does know her MP)

You may like to include a short paragraph about yourself – if you have not met  or know your MP. Just brief and to the point

You may want to link to another letter – such as the edited version of my letter that Beth Thomas did, or maybe a local childminder (or your self ) has written a good letter to the PM

You may like to request that your MP visits your setting

Best wishes,
